Subaru’s US Factory is Producing Too Much Power! How Subaru Values Sustainability

Subaru has a long-standing history of giving back through the Subaru Love Promise, where they partner with several charities to help animals and people in need. During their last Share the Love event, they raised over $31 million in donations to help support charities nationwide. Subaru wants not only to produce quality products, but to be a part of a greater good, and these donations are just one way they’re doing that.

Another of Subaru’s pledges is to the Earth. They advocate for conservation and do their part. They don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk. They are committed to reducing waste, conserving resources, and preserving natural spaces. All Subaru products are built in zero-landfill production plants, preventing waste from sitting in landfills for decades.

A major breakthrough happened at the end of last year when Subaru announced their Indiana Automotive plant is self-sustaining. They installed rooftop solar panels to the building in August 2025, and it’s currently producing more than three times the electricity used by the plant’s expansion. That means Subaru can use that clean energy elsewhere at the plant to cut costs and shrink its carbon footprint. Subaru estimates this new system will offset over 250 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and produce millions of clean electricity over its lifetime. The Indiana Plant is also the only US auto production plant to be designated a backyard wildlife habitat! In 2003, the plant earned that title from the National Wildlife Federation by becoming a zero-landfill plant. The Indiana plant sits on over 800 acres and serves as a home for a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, deer, coyotes, beavers, turtles, ducks, frogs, and many more!

Moving from manufacturing plants to real plants, Subaru is also partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide and plant 100,000 native trees across the country! They currently established the largest corporate tree distribution ever, using their resources to get trees into communities that need them most. Through this partnership and other Subaru Loves the Earth initiatives, Subaru has distributed and planted over 1 million trees!
