Subaru’s Indiana Plant Producing Hybrids

February 10th, 2026 by

Subaru’s Indiana Automotive plant recently made headlines with their self-sustaining approach to power. They switched to solar panels and were able to power the whole plant with solar alone; a huge step in advancing their conservation goals. The Indiana plant is back with big news; they’ve officially begun manufacturing hybrid vehicles!

On February 10, the plant officially began hybrid production, completing a 2026 Forester Hybrid. This is the first hybrid vehicle produced by Subaru in the US! With its successful production, all Subaru Forester models sold in the US will be made in the Indiana factory. Subaru Indiana Automotive is now building two of the most popular vehicles in Subaru’s lineup—the Forester and the Crosstrek.

Scott Brand, president and chief operating officer of SIA, said, “Bringing hybrid vehicle assembly to our facility has been in the works for five years. Seeing the start of mass production is highly rewarding and the culmination of a lot of hard work by our associates.”

Moving production to the US isn’t just beneficial to the company. It benefits consumers too! Not only does it create jobs for their surrounding communities, but it also contributes directly to local economies. It reduces shipping times, so you can get your new car when you need it. Prices are reduced too as there aren’t tariffs to worry about, saving you money. Subaru is passionate about conservation, actively working to reduce their carbon footprint and improve the environment. The Indiana plant is the only US auto plant designated as a backyard wildlife habitat. Its 800+ acres of land serve as a home for deer, rabbits, beavers, hawks, bald eagles, and more.

The Forester has been one of Subaru’s most popular models, with over 175,000 vehicles being sold in 2025 alone! The 2026 Forester has a few upgrades, including the latest generation of Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. This includes advanced safety features like Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, Steering Responsive Headlights, High Beam Assist, and more. We love the Forester, and so does the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2026 Forester won their TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, marking its 10th consecutive year winning the title. To win the title, cars must perform well in multiple crash and safety tests.
